Victorian town wins sweet treat bake
TONY EASTLEY: From where we're "Anaboliset Aineet" broadcasting here in country north "Anabolika Definition" western New South Wales, the local cooks take their vanilla slices pretty seriously. But a Victorian town has secured the crown after a hotly contested national bake off recognising the signature Australian sweet.
The population of Merbein quadrupled on the weekend during the Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph.
STEPHANIE CORSETTI: The population of Merbein on an ordinary day is 2,500 people. But more than 10,000 visitors poured into the region on Saturday to not only sample some treats, but bring some cheer to a town that's faced some tough times.
BERNADETTE WELLS: The dried fruit industry's Comprar Levitra been suffering from low commodity "Oxandrolone Powder India" prices and also from the drought when water prices were so high people couldn't afford to buy water, they just deserted their blocks, didn't water them and they died. That's a third of Merbein went that way.
STEPHANIE CORSETTI: That's the vanilla slice competition organiser, Bernadette Wells. She says many growers have been depressed in recent years, but this event will provide a much needed boost.
BERNADETTE WELLS: Really struggling economically and we needed something like this to lift the spirits as well Testosterone Cypionate Peak as lift the economy.
STEPHANIE CORSETTI: Steve Bennett is on the board for the growers group Dried Fruits Australia. He remembers five years ago when irrigators sold their water entitlements to the Commonwealth to get out of the industry.
STEVE BENNETT: There were a lot of irrigators that were in a position where they had to retire or were looking for ways to exit out of irrigation and it was one option that they could do, because there were very limited options at the time.
Returns weren't very good for horticulture and it was difficult to find buyers for their property. Dried fruit prices have stabilised over the last few years so I hope there is a bit more optimism creeping back into the industry.

MELISSA Tren-H100 Global Anabolics HUDACK: It's huge to you know pick up a trophy like this, it just amazing. You know, we sell probably 2,000 vanillas a month I think and that's just on second place. So the boys are going to be pretty busy.
STEPHANIE CORSETTI: And what is it about vanilla slice that makes it so enticing?
MELISSA HUDACK: It's iconic for Australia, it's a bit like the lamington. It's become you know just part of the Aussie culture.
